How should spare vulcanized belts be stored before use?

Update Time:2026/11/5

Direct answer: Keep spare belts in a cool, dark room at roughly 10 to 25 degrees Celsius, away from direct sunlight, electric motors and welding equipment (ozone), oils and solvents. Store them laid flat on a shelf or coiled loosely on a wide support. Folding a belt or draping it over a narrow bar sets a permanent bend into the carcass.

Belts like 390H-10 keep their shape best when stored flat or on a wide-diameter support.

Precision ground belts like 5M-1210-220 must keep their tooth form: never store them folded.

Before fitting a belt that has been stored

  • Visual check: look for surface cracks, hard or glossy patches, and any flat set or bend memory in the carcass.
  • Flexibility check: the belt should bend around a pulley smoothly, without a hinge point or white stress lines.
  • Length check: measure or compare against the old belt; a stored belt should not have changed length measurably.
  • Joint area: on vulcanized belts, inspect the joint region for signs of ageing before trusting it at full tension.
8M-1640-30 belt inspected before fitting
A five-minute inspection of a stored belt, like this 8M-1640-30, costs far less than a second stop to fit another one.
Belts that have been stored for several years are usually still serviceable if they pass the checks above, but treat the joint and the cord area as the priority inspection points, and keep the initial tension on the conservative side at start-up.
