How should PU timing belts be cleaned and maintained?

Update Time:2026/11/5

Direct answer: Brush off dust dry, then wipe with a cloth dampened in water with a neutral detergent or isopropyl alcohol. Keep strong solvents such as acetone, ketone-based thinners and aggressive alkaline degreasers away from the belt, because they can attack polyurethane. Pair each cleaning with a short inspection of tension, tooth wear and tracking.

Seamless 5M belt with a fabric cover (5M-2100-100+NFT): covers wipe clean and protect the tooth surface.

A five-step cleaning routine

  • Stop and lock out the machine before touching the belt. Cleaning a running belt is a hand-injury risk and cleans unevenly.
  • Dry-brush the teeth and the back first. Most debris on a timing belt sits loose and comes off without any liquid.
  • Wipe with a damp cloth: water plus a small amount of neutral detergent, or isopropyl alcohol for grease and adhesive residue.
  • Rinse or wipe again with clean water if detergent was used, and let the belt dry fully before restart.
  • Clean around any machining, holes or cleats with a soft brush; these areas trap residue that shortens belt life if left in place.

Machined belts like 3GT-1545-80 (ground teeth, punched holes) need the extra brush pass around the holes and tooth roots.

Maintenance checks to pair with cleaning

S5M-220 belt with even, clean tooth surfaces
Even tooth surfaces like these on an S5M-220 are what a clean, correctly tensioned belt should look like at inspection.
If the belt runs in washdown or heavily oily conditions, shorten the inspection intervals rather than stretching the cleaning method: aggressive solvents save minutes today and cost belt life later.
