Can I run a PU timing belt on pulleys made for rubber timing belts?

Direct answer: In most cases yes. Polyurethane timing belts are made to the same standardized tooth systems as rubber timing belts — T, AT, HTD and STD — so a PU belt with the same pitch and profile engages the same pulleys. Before switching, match the pitch and tooth form, check the pulleys for wear, and confirm the PU cord option suits your load.

What must match between belt and pulley

What changes when you switch from rubber to PU

  • Wear behaviour: PU generates far less rubber dust and resists abrasion, oil and many chemicals, which keeps pulleys and the machine cleaner.
  • Cord choice: PU belts are typically reinforced with steel or aramid cords, which limits stretch under constant load; confirm the cord type against your tension and torque.
  • Environment: PU handles humidity, oils and many cleaning agents better than standard rubber compounds; extreme dry heat or very low temperatures need a check against the datasheet.
  • Backings and coatings: nylon or fabric covers can be added where the belt back runs over idlers or needs extra abrasion resistance.

One caution: replacing a rubber belt with PU does not increase the power capacity of the drive if the pulleys are undersized. If the original drive was marginal, verify the torque calculation before you switch, not after.
