How do I measure a worn vulcanized belt to order the right replacement?

Update Time:2026/10/27

Short answer: Lay the belt flat on a bench, measure the outside circumference along the belt centerline with a flexible tape, then measure the width and the thickness at three points each. Note the splice angle and the running direction, add a few photos, and those numbers are usually enough for us to quote and make an exact replacement.

The four measurements that matter

Outside length

Measure the outer circumference on a flat surface, keeping the tape on the centerline of the belt. Do not measure the inner face. If the belt is broken, tape the pieces end to end and tell us roughly how much is missing.

Width

Measure at three points along the belt and give us the most common value. Edge wear can reduce width, so a worn-edge reading is not the original specification.

Thickness

Use calipers away from the splice area. Covers can wear down or swell in service, so take readings at several points and report the range, not a single number.

Splice angle and direction

Note the splice angle, commonly 45 to 60 degrees on flat vulcanized belts, and mark the running direction with an arrow on the belt or in your photo.

Mistakes that lead to a wrong replacement

  • Measuring the inside circumference instead of the outside, which understates the length by roughly twice the belt thickness.
  • Measuring while the belt is still curved or on the machine, so the tape follows a shorter path than the belt really is.
  • Trusting the machine manual alone, because the machine may have been modified or refitted with different pulleys since it was built.
  • Ignoring that a heavily worn belt may have stretched or lost cover thickness, so its measured length can drift from the original design.

On toothed constructions, also tell us the pitch and tooth count so we can verify the length against the gearing.

What to send with your enquiry

  • The four measurements above, plus photos of the belt laid flat and of the machine it runs on.
  • Working conditions: load, belt speed, pulley diameter, temperature, and any oil, dust or moisture.
  • The quantity you need and whether you want spares produced in the same batch.
  • Any original part number or brand reference, used for cross-reference only. GOODLY is an independent manufacturer.
If the belt has already failed in service, say so. A belt that broke at the splice, glazed on the running face or cracked at the edges points to different causes, and we would rather fix the cause than sell you the same failure twice.
