Custom or stock timing belt: when is a made-to-order belt worth it?
Direct answer: Choose stock when a catalogue belt matches your pitch, tooth count, length and width. Choose made-to-order when one of those dimensions or features is not available, or when adapting the machine to a stock size would cost more than the belt itself. Custom is a fit decision, not a quality upgrade.

The four cases that justify a made-to-order belt
- The length is not standard. A fixed motor position and a non-standard centre distance often need a length that no catalogue covers.
- The width is not standard. Too wide fouls the frame, too narrow loses capacity. Slitting or a mould is the answer.
- The tooth count is fixed by the machine. When a pulley pair sets the tooth count, the belt has to match it, not the other way round.
- Features are needed. Cleats, coatings, ground teeth, punched holes or a specific cord are added to a base belt and cannot be bought off the shelf.

Stock against made-to-order
| Point | Stock belt | Made-to-order belt |
|---|---|---|
| Lead time | From stock, days rather than weeks | Production run, confirmed per order |
| Cost | Catalogue price | Base belt plus tooling where a new mould is needed |
| Fit | Only if a catalogue size matches every dimension | Built to the drawing |
| Minimum quantity | Often a single piece | Depends on the construction, ask per item |
| Risk | Low, but the machine may need adapting | Design must be agreed before production starts |

How to decide in one pass
- Write down pitch, tooth count, pitch length, width and any feature. Those five items decide almost every case.
- Check whether a stock belt matches all five. If it does, buy stock and keep the money for spares.
- If one dimension is only slightly off, ask whether the machine can move instead: motor slots, an idler or a different pulley are often cheaper than a new mould.
- If the machine cannot move and the dimension is fixed, go made-to-order and put everything on a single drawing.
Made-to-order does not mean unlimited. Maximum length, minimum width and the available tooth profiles still apply, so confirm the limits before you design around them.
